How to start

  • no joke
  • a promise
  • even before menu

The BIG 4

Cycle (say it, say it again, etc…)

  • psychology, first loop bring in from long term memory necessary material
  • probability, probably some individual miss what you say, say it about 3 times

Verbal punctuation

  • time to get time on board
  • "here I am" talking about X
  • verbal boundaries between the points

Near Miss

  • concept, but also something that isn't the concept but almost
  • comparing examples by something that isn't the concept
  • help establish its boundaries

Ask Question

  • they should frequent and easy to answer
  • pause for 5s between the question and ask the answer
  • the pause feel very long for the speaker, but not for the audience

Time & Place

best hour 10h30 in the morning

distribute candy bars after 15h

Hall well lit, outside if possible

never dim the light, etc…

Full

harder to have enthusiastic audience to a disperse audience

Flat

not theatrical like because people expect theatre

Blackboard

usable blackboard is important

Draw

  • allow you to draw, icons, pictures, etc…
  • psychology, intelligence is buried in linguistic and visual system
  • draw often

Lists

  • make lists!

Target

  • show something with your hands, point the blackboard
  • a great talked pointed to zone not in relation with the talk, it was still effective

Overheads

DO NOT: read your transparences

people know how to read, and reading will just annoy them substantial fraction of the audience will be annoyed

DO NOT: stand well appart from your transparences

DO NOT: wave your pointer around, becomes a distraction

you don't need it, because of the thing you have at the end of your arm

DO NOT: cover and uncover the slides

substantial fraction of the audience will be annoyed

  • you can add things, colors

Transparent are often overused.

  • He didn't copy anybody, but look to everybody, and adapt to my own skills

How to Stop

Stopping is extremely difficult.
